Year 6 Leaver Expectation - History
Children will have a wide and developed understanding of how Derby and the local area was significant throughout history and how our world today in Derby is influenced by events and periods of history. Children will know the main events, key people, and features from a range of periods of history, and be able to place these into chronological order. They can use timelines to show changes and developments in settlement, struggle, culture and technology and know-how peoples of the past influence us today. Children are able to make informed choices of historical evidence, understanding bias and propaganda. They know that history can be interpreted in different ways depending on the evidence source or perspective. They understand how historians use evidence to form hypotheses, and are able to use a range of artefacts, evidence and contextual knowledge to draw their own conclusions, asking questions and refining lines of enquiry where appropriate. They research in different ways, but know that there may not be definitive answers to questions. They can compare periods in history across the world identifying key features and similarities, and present information from different viewpoints. Children understand cause and consequence, both in the shorter and longer terms, and across the world. They use appropriate historical terms in spoken and written communications. They are curious about peoples and cultures, and eager to ask questions to understand the past better. They know that some concepts are continuous, and that others are linked to a more specific place or time. They make links in abstract terms, concepts, ideas, and events in different periods of history, and understand that some of these are of key historical significance. Their understanding of the past informs their understanding of diversity, equality, and inclusion.
