Music Progression

Year 6 Leaver Expectation - Music

By the end of Year 6, children at Morley Primary School can confidently read written musical notation in the treble clef.  They can apply this knowledge to the piano/keyboard through both technology and physical instruments.  They can follow written music to play along in a group and can recognise standard rhythmic notation.  Children know the formal names of rhythmical values and understand the link between pulse and rhythm.  Children have a confidence with the seven elements of music and use this associated vocabulary when talking about and appraising music. Children can improvise around a given set of notes and can perform this with musicality and an awareness to the style of music. They have experienced opportunities to create and appraise their and their peer’s compositions.  Children have a strong understanding of the orchestra; they can listen intently and identify instrumentation.  Listening to music is an area where children have significant experience.  They listen to a wide range of music for pleasure and can talk confidently about their likes and dislikes in an ever-increasing range of styles, periods, and genres.  Children can also listen to a range of compositions throughout history and can listen to identify features associated with the seven elements of music.  All children have had the opportunity to learn musical instruments though the Wider-Opportunities project.  All children have performed in choirs and many with smaller ensembles, including solos with increasing confidence. Children have watched live performances of music including bands and orchestras.  Children sing together in school and have a love of singing.  They can sing a wide range of songs from memory in unison, rounds and part-singing.  Music is at the heart of Morley Primary School.
