Maths at Morley Primary School

Our curriculum aims to ensure that all our pupils:

  • Become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, though varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that they develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately
  • Reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language.
  • Can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of problems with increasing sophistication linking to the real world.

At Morley Primary School, we believe that, with enough time and practice, every child can be successful at mastering the mathematics programmes of study covered by the Primary National Curriculum. Maths lessons are taught daily and each topic is covered over a block of weeks. The emphasis is on deepening children’s understanding in key skills before moving on.  Manipulative resources are available for children to use to give them practical experience to back up their understanding.  Vocabulary and reasoning are key concepts that allow children to explain their thinking in a variety of different ways.
